The Watercolor Project

In 2018, painter Brian Frink and I took art and creative writing students to Chile and Peru. Everyone was encouraged to cross boundaries of discipline and comfort and to try something they were not particularly good at. In addition to our core creative practice, Brian wrote poems, and I painted. I had never had any art training and was not particularly good at watercolors, but the work answered something inside me, and I have kept at it.

A teacher once said that sticking with something you’ll probably never excel at ends up schooling the spirit. I believe that.

The Photography Project

I have been taking photographs most of my life. While I don’t have the drive or talent to pursue photography as a professional art form, I am grateful for what the practice demands of my eye and my attention, and sometimes my inner life—all of which has its rewards in my writing.

The first rotation of these shots are from 2016 and 2017 and include locations in
